The King of Bohemia hires Sherlock Holmes to retrieve a photograph of him with actress Irene Adler. The king is getting ready to get married and Miss Adler has threatened to make the photograph public on the same day that his marriage is officially announced.
Holmes uses some information that the king provides him, a couple of disguises, and some further subterfuge to figure out where Miss Adler has hidden the photograph.
Holmes and Adler arrive at Miss Adler's home the next morning, to retrieve the photograph and explain all to the king who has accompanied them. Holmes does not find what he sought. Miss Adler figured out what he was up to and has already left. She leaves behind a picture of herself, but not the picture that the king hoped to recover, and a note for Holmes.
This season of Sherlock Holmes originally aired in 1984-85. This is the first episode of Sherlock Holmes that starred Jeremy Brett in the titles role.
I have seen some of the episodes from this series before, decades ago, but I don't recall exactly which ones. This one did not ring any bells.
I was a bit surprised by Holmes' use of disguises in this episode. He was doing more than dressing up but I didn't remember that disguises were part of his repertoire.
On the whole I enjoyed this episode but it didn't blow me away. I will be curious to see how it compares to future episodes in this season of the show.
