A Cardassian ship that is experiencing major problems with it's life support systems arrives at the space station. Natima Lanf, the leader of the three people aboard the space ship, is an old acquaintance of Quark. She explains that her two companions are her students. Quark tries to get close to Natima. She is hostile at first but eventually warms up to the point that she is at least interested in rekindling what they had seven years before.

Garak warns Commander Sisko that it wouldn't be wise to help the three Cardassians as they are wanted by the Cardassian high command. Sisko helps the fugitive Cardassians, despite the warning, until he finds out that the Bejorans government wants to turn them over to the Cardassians as part of a prisoner exchange.

Playing God

Arjin, a Trill host candidate, comes to Deep Space Nine to be mentored and evaluated by Jadzia Dax. Chief O'Brien deals with an infestation of voles aboard the space station. Jake admits to his father that he's in love with a Dabo girl.

Jadzia's initial evaluation of Arjin is that he isn't a good candidate to be a host. He seems to just be telling her what he thinks she wants to hear. Together they go into the wormhole, aboard the Mekong and pick up something on the outer hull of the runabout that Jadzia describes as space seaweed.

Jadzia studies the thing attached to the Mekong once they get back. It seems to be a proto-universe. It is expanding and threatens to destroy Deep Space Nine. There is some debate over what to do about it. Ultimately, despite not knowing what will happen, Sisko decides that it needs to be returned to the Gamma Quadrant.

They beam down to the planet and discover a town of people living there. The people at first suspect that Dax and Odo have something to do with the recent disappearance of some of the people of the village. Dax and Odo convince the villagers that they are not responsible for the disappearances and then start to work on trying to figure out what happened to the missing people.

Benjamin Sisko insists that Jake get a job. He assigns him to be Chief O'Brien's assistant. Benjamin expects that Jake will one day join Starfleet. Jake isn't so sure about that but he doesn't say anything to his father about his feelings about joining Starfleet.

Chief O'Brien can't figure out what's causing the problem. He becomes increasingly paranoid. It leads him to eventually flee the space station and head through the wormhole. He's convinced that whatever is going on has something to do with the Paradas, a race with whom they recently made first contact. Eventually he gets his answer.

They bring it back to the Alpha Quadrant, to the space station. They proceed to examine it. During the night it escapes from the lab in which it was kept. Chief O'Brien tracks it through the ducts and finds what looks like the remnants of the life form but it is no longer alive.

Rivals

Chief O'Brien gets annoyed when he learns that Doctor Bashir is better than him at racquetball. Quark feels threatened by Martus, who opens up a casino on the Promenade. Sisko and Dax discover that something is causing people to experience big swings of good and bad luck aboard the space station.

Thoughts

This episode doesn't do it for me. Nothing about it pulled me in, touched me, or gave me a reason to care. There was an attempt to explain the whole luck aspect of the episode but it felt very unscientific.
