Dear White People 1.03

Chapter III

Troy Fairbanks is running for president of the student council. His chances for winning are boosted by the fallout from the Dear Black People party. It probably doesn't hurt that his father is the dean of Winchester. Troy's relationship with his father isn't ideal. He goes along with what his father wants but he is torn is torn and it shows. He feels as though he has to do what his father wants but he rolls his eyes a lot at his old man when he isn't looking.

Troy has an at least one secret that he keeps from his father: he is having a fling with one of the professors, Neika Hobbs (Nia Long). He voted for someone other than himself in the election. President Fletcher wants Troy to help Kurt, his son, who was initially blamed for the Dear Black People party. Kurt also approaches Troy about a pardon of sorts. Troy, who has known Kurt since they were kids, politely declines to help him this time.

Troy and Neika meetup at the boathouse. Things get hot and heavy. Troy doesn't realize it but someone sees them and films their activities. He gets two texts the next morning. The first is from his father, congratulating him for winning the election. The second is from the person who filmed him the night before, Kurt. His text includes a copy of the video.

Thoughts

I was prepared to be underwhelmed. Troy seemed like a cardboard cut out, prior to this episode. This episode reveals that he is anything but one-dimensional.

I think this is my favorite episode to date.
