Samurai Jack 3.10

XXXVI: Jack, the Monks, and the Ancient Master's Son

Jack encounters a couple monks who come from the Shaolin Temple. They fight but soon realize that they have received the same training. The monks take Jack to the Sholin Temple which is hidden from Aku. The ancient master, who protects the other monks from Aku, recognizes Jack. He was just a boy when Jack came to the Shaolin Temple to train.

Jack explains his quest. They know of a portal and the two monks whom he first encountered lead him there. The portal is atop a giant temple. In order to get to the top they have have to climb a great ways. Stone statues come to life to prevent them from achieving their goal. Jack makes it to the portal. The two monks stay behind to hold off the horde of stone golems.

It looks hopeless for the monks. They are about to get overwhelmed and killed when Jack shows up to help them defeat the living statues. The portal closes. In the battle with the golems the portal site is destroyed.

Thoughts

I have vague memories of watching this episode before, years ago. I recalled the monks but not the portal or the climb to the portal.

This is one of the silliest titles for an episode of Samurai Jack that I have found. I would have just called it Jack and the Shaolin Monks.

I loved the climb. The presentation of the fights with the stone statues reminded me of a video game. The heights to which they climbed made my skin crawl even though it is just a cartoon.

This has to be one of the best episodes of which I had little to no memory.
