The Principle of Restricted Choice
Chief Burgle is in the process of getting relieved of her position as chief, because her local police department is being absorbed into the county police department. She ticks off her new boss, digs through some of her stepfather's belongings, and follows up on a lead. She goes to the gas station where Maurice stopped to try and find the address he lost. When Burgle sees that the page ripped out of the phone book is the one that had Ennis' name on it she takes the whole book as evidence.
Emmit and Sy go to their attorney. They explain to him about the loan, V. M. Varga, and their predicament. The lawyer tries to do an internet search for Varga and inadvertently tips Varga off to the search. A couple of Varga's men intercept the lawyer the next day and throw him off a parking garage.
Ray is very pleased when he finds out that Maurice death has initially been ruled an accident. Nikki's brain is elsewhere. She notices that Ray's chi is out of alignment. She tells him that he needs to fix it and there's only two choices. He can either get the stamp or make amends with his brother. Ray goes over to talk things through with Emmit.
Nikki breaks into Emmit's house while Ray and Emmit talk in the front yard. She discovers that the stamp isn't there and takes action. She pulls out her tampon and writes a message (Who's the ass now?) to Emmit in blood on a picture of an donkey hanging in his home office. Emmit feels good about the meeting with Ray until he discovers the message.
Emmit tells Sy about everything that happened. Sy has a plan. He finds Ray and tells him to stay away from his brother. Ray doesn't care for Sy's tone of voice. Sy puts an exclamation point on their conversation by backing into Ray's corvette by ramming it with his Hummer.
V. M. Varga and his men start to make their move. They park a tractor trailer in one of Stussy's lots and then show up at the Stussy HQ. They take over some unused offices. Emmit tries to object but Varga won't let them. He tells them that their best course of action is to just enjoy the ride because they don't have any choice. He also apologizes for killing their lawyer.
Thoughts
I love how the different stories are playing out and how they connect. The police don't seem to have as big a role in this story as they did in the previous two. There are some elements of the story that seem a big overly stylized, just for looks. The first thing that comes to mind is what little is seen of the interior of the rig that Varga's men park in one of Stussy's parking lots.
The moment where Nikki broke into Emmit's house was a bit tense but at the same time it also seemed surrealistic. I had trouble taking it seriously because it felt so over the top.
This was another excellent episode. I'm not certain that everything will come together in the end, to my satisfaction, but for now I am enjoying the ride very much.
