Toy Story 2 (1999)

Starring Tom Hanks, Tim Allen
Directed by John Lasseter, Ash Brannon, Lee Unkrich

Woody misses going to camp with Andy after his arm gets torn. He helps Wheezy, a toy penguin, escape from a yard sale but in the process he is stolen by Al, a toy collector. Woody is a rare collectible. Al plans to sell him along with a few other toys to a museum in Japan.

Buzz Lightyear, Mr. Potato Head, Hamm the Piggy Bank, Rex the Green Dinosaur, and Slinky Dog go looking for Woody. They make their way to Al's Toy Barn but Woody isn't there. Buzz encounters another Buzz while he is separated from the others. The two Buzzes fight. Andy's Buzz loses and gets locked up.

The others meet the store's Buzz Lightyear. He has an anti-gravity belt and takes himself about as seriously as the their Buzz Lightyear did in the first Toy Story movie. They don't realize he isn't their Buzz.

Woody spends the night in Al's apartment with Jessie the Yodeling Cowgirl, Bullseye the Horse, and Stinky Pete the Prospector. He gets his arm fixed and cleaned up by a toy repair man. He wants to leave and return to Andy's home but Jessie and Stinky Pete talk him into going to Japan with them.

Al stops by the Toy Barn for a few things. The Buzz and the other toys follow him back to his apartment. They unknowingly release Zurg, Buzz's nemesis, who follows them back to Al's apartment. The movie ends with a desperate rescue attempt which encounters more than one obstacle.

Thoughts

I had not seen this since it first came out, 20 years ago. I remembered bits and pieces of it. I enjoyed it very much both times I watched it. It feels a little more intelligent than the first installment in this series.
