Dear White People 1.05

Chapter V

Reggie spends the Saturday wandering around campus with Joelle, Rashid, and Al. Sam spends the day at the botanical garden with Gabe. The others try to distract him but Reggie can't stop thinking about Sam. They stop by a few parties.

The day ends at a big party. Addison, who's hosting, is friends with Reggie. They win the trivia contest together but things get ugly afterwards. Everyone is dancing. Addison starts rapping to a song whose lyrics include a certain word that begins with the letter N. Reggie asks him to not say that word. Addison doesn't understand and takes offense. He assumes that Reggie is calling him a racist.

Everyone is listening to them. They almost get into a fight. The cops show up. One of them pulls a gun on Reggie and demands to see ID. The cop doesn't believe that Reggie is a student despite other people at the party, black and white, vouching for him. It isn't until the cop sees his ID that he puts the gun away and backs down. The party is over. The night is ruined.

Thoughts

I wasn't sure where this one was going. The first half of the episode was very light. It was just friends, classmates, hanging out. The ending was anything but light. It was intense. I didn't think Reggie was going to get shot by the cop but the way the actors playing Reggie and the cop played it really sold it.

There were some other things going on in this episode. The small group of friends pick up a straggler, Kelsey. They don't know her but she hangs with them for the rest of the day. It felt a little odd. There also was a moment where it seemed as if Reggie might end up with Joelle before the end of the night. That moment seemed to come and go.
