Dear White People 1.06

Chapter VI

A number of groups meet at Armstrong-Parker Hall to try and decide how to respond to the incident involving Reggie and the unnamed campus security officer. Reggie has a meeting with the Dean scheduled for later that day. Sam, Joelle, Gabe, Troy and a few others decided to be there for him. They all show up except for Reggie.

The dean eventually kicks them out of his office. Outside they decide to organize a protest at the pep rally that night. Sam goes looking for Reggie but Gabe pulls her into coffee with a couple of his friends. Sam tracks down Reggie, after coffee with Gabe. He isn't interested in the rally idea. She follows him to an open mic where he does a poetry reading, an original piece. It invokes the way he felt last night and still feels. Sam is very impressed.

They walk back to Armstrong-Parker. She wants him to read his piece at the protest. He doesn't. They get into a bit of a back and forth. He makes it clear how much it hurts him to see her with Gabe. She follows him into his room. It looks like they are about to kiss when her phone rings. It is Gabe. She lets it ring. The episode ends.

Thoughts

This episode focused on Sam, even though Reggie's predicament is at the center of it all. This makes me wonder if they are going to rotate through the same five characters in the second half of the season. It seems like the incident at the party at the end of 1.05 could be the focus of the last five episodes in the same way that the Dear Black People party was the focus for the first five.

I'm guessing by the way it ends that Sam does not leave, she stays with Reggie. Based on how things have gone up to this point I don't think that's a given.

This was a good one.
