Fargo 3.04

The Narrow Escape Problem

Ray shaves off his mustache, puts on a wig, and impersonates his brother. He goes into the bank and asks to see the contents of the safety deposit box that Nikki found out about when she broke into his house in 3.02. Ray doesn't have the key so they have to drill the lock. When he examines the contents of the box he finds nothing but a bag with ashes in it. He asks for $10K in cash and leaves.

Gloria gets back to work on the investigation into the murder of her step-father, Ennis Stussy. Chief Dammick, her new boss, doesn't care for her insubordination and makes that perfectly clear. She tries to explain but he doesn't care. She continues with the investigation anyway. She goes to the coroners office in St. Cloud and looks at the body and effects of Maurice LeFay. That leads her to Ray Stussy, Maurice's parole officer. Gloria meets Winnie Lopez, another cop, while she is the bathroom at the parole office. Winnie is investigating a traffic incident. Gloria and Winnie part ways before they get a chance to compare notes.

Gloria talks to Ray. She is struck by the fact that his last names is Stussy. He doesn't have much to give her and doesn't want to give her anything. She leaves. Ray is ready to go meet Nikki when he gets called into his boss's office. His boss's boss is also there. They have photographs of Ray and Nikki together. They were taken at the party in 3.01 at Emmit's home.

Ray is given a choice which includes the opportunity to tell his boss that it was just a one-time thing. He tells them that he's in love with Nikki. They force him to quit. He walks outside to his car only to find Sy waiting for him. Sy gives him the finger and drives off in his Hummer. Ray is left behind with his car which has at least two boots on it.

Sy goes back to the office where he finds officer Winnie Lopez waiting for him. She is investigating the incident that happened in 3.02 in the parking lot outside the diner. The hummer is registered not under Sy's name but in the company's name. Officer Lopez wants to know who the driver was. Sy can see Yuri and Meemo, Varga's men, watching him through the glass walls of his office. He gets very nervous and gives Officer Lopez the run around to the best of his ability.

Varga goes to Emmit's home. He gets there during dinner. He joins them for the meal, much to Emmit's consternation. He wants Emmit to take him on as a partner. He has plans that will make Emmit a billionaire. Emmit wishes he would just go away. Varga asks Emmit about his brother and Nikki, if they will be a problem. Emmit says they are a couple of losers and doesn't expect any problems from them.

Ray was supposed to meet with Nikki and the man that is going to back sponsor their bridge team. He goes to a bar and drinks instead. Nikki is left hanging with the backer, wondering what happened to Ray.

Gloria is getting ready to go to bed when someone knocks on her front door. It is Winnie Lopez and she wants to share some information with Gloria.

Thoughts

The opening of the episode is narrated by Billy Bob Thornton who played Lorne Malvo in Season 1. He reads part of the narration that accompanies Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev. Each part is assigned an instrument or set of instruments and is identified with a character. The two that stuck with me the most clearly are Varga as the Wolf and Gloria as Peter. I thought it was an interesting touch but it only showed up here and there in the episode.

I love watching how things are coming apart, similar to the previous two seasons and even the movie. One element that I thought was missing from this season was a friend or confidant for Gloria. She has been a loner up to this point. Now, I feel as thought that role may have finally been filled by Winnie Lopez.

I continue to be impressed with how the various parts of this show are cut together. I'm not rooting for anyone. I continue to be amazed at how the characters in this show screw up their lives. Varga and his men are evil. I hope that they all get what they have coming to them.
