Fargo 3.05

The House of Special Purpose

Ray dresses up like Emmit, once again. He and Nikki make a sex tape. She wears a wig to disguise her appearance. They leave it on Emmit's front stoop with a message. They want $100K or else they will share the tape with Grace, Emmit's wife. Grave finds the message and watches the tape. She leaves Emmit and takes the kids and his mother.

Sy gets in to the office that morning and finds Varga waiting for him. Yuri and Meemo have told him about the chat Sy had with a police officer the day before. Varga isn't pleased. He's taking over Sy's office. Yuri forces Sy to drink a cup of pee before carting him off.

Sy has a lunch meeting with Ruby Goldfarb (Mary McDonnell), who expressed an interest in buying the Stussy operation before Varga entered the picture. He breaks off the meeting early when gets a text from Emmit. He goes over to Emmit's house and finds him in tears over what happened. They get into an argument. Sy blames Emmit for not giving him greater latitude in dealing with Ray and Nikki. He also blames him for not investigating the source of what they thought was a loan but turned out to be an investment from Varga. Emmit finally gives Sy permission to do whatever is necessary to deal with Ray and Nikki.

Ray proposes to Nikki. She says yes and then they go shopping for clothes for the wedding. Nikki gets a call from Sy, while Ray is in the changing room. They arrange to meet at one of the Stussy lots. Ray gets home from the fitting only to find Gloria and Winnie waiting for him. They bring him in for questioning. They are starting to get somewhere when Chief Dammick sticks his nose in to their investigation. He argues with Gloria. He forces her to release him. He still thinks that it is just a coincidence.

Varga has a chat with Emmit, once he gets into the office, in the parking garage. He's worried about Sy. He knows about what Ray did and thinks that Sy may be working with Ray. Emmit doesn't think so but promises to talk to Sy. They go upstairs. Emmit finds a man from the IRS waiting for him. Ray triggered the IRS when he withdrew $10K in cash from the bank while he was disguised as Emmit. Varga sees the whole thing through the glass walls of the office but has to wait for the IRS man to leave. He suggests that they just show him the fake books.

Sy meets with Nikki. She's upped the price to $200K. Sy thinks it is ridiculous and only wants to give them $40K. Yuri and Meemo have been tailing Sy. They pull up and confront Sy and Nikki. She doesn't care for them and let's them know it. They respond by beating the crap out of her. She manages to crawl back into her car and drive to Ray's home. He finds her when he gets there, still dressed and curled up in a ball.

Thoughts

There wasn't much of Gloria and Winnie in this episode. They were there but the focus for the most part seemed to be on the Stussy brothers, plus Nikki and Sy.

It is a bit amusing to see how Varga is getting blindsided by the information he's getting and sometimes seems to misinterpret what he's hearing. He bought into the Stussy operation because he thought it was a clean one. The war between Ray and Emmit seems to be muddying the waters quite a bit.

I'm rooting for Gloria and Winnie. I have a hard time empathizing with or caring for any one else in this season. I'm still very impressed and eager to see how and where things are going to go from here.
