Star Wars (1977)

aka Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

directed by George Lucas
starring Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford

Luke Skywalker, a farm boy from the desert planet of Tatooine, is drawn into the battle between the rebellion and the empire when C-3PO and R2-D2, a couple of droids belonging to Princess Leia, one of the leaders of the rebellion, fall into his hands. The empire comes looking for the droids because one of them has the plans to its new mega-powerful space station, the Death Star.

Luke, C-3PO, and R2-D2 escape Tatooine with some help from Ben Kenobi (a jedi knight) aboard the Millennium Falcon which is piloted by Han Solo and Chewbacca. They try to go to Alderan, to return the droids to the princess, but instead wind up on the Death Star. They discover that Princess Leia is a prisoner aboard the Death Star. They rescue her and escape to Yavin. Ben Kenobi is killed in a duel with Darth Vader, his former student before they are able to escape the Death Star.

The Death Star follows the small team to one of the moons of Yavin and prepares to destroy the moon. The rebels use the plans contained within R2-D2 to pinpoint the weak point in the Death Star. They send a few dozen fighters to destroy the Death Star.

Thoughts

This may be Episode IV but it is also the first movie that was made. I saw it in the theater 3 times within the first year, once with my parents and twice with friends. At least one of those was a birthday party. I loved it then and still love it today. I'm not crazy about the updates that were made to the movie in 1997, and that is the version of the movie that I just watched. It felt wrong when I saw the updated version at the Uptown Theater in 1997. Those special effects don't add anything to the movie. It was a great movie as is. The most noticeable added special effects are in the scenes that take place on Tatooine and stick out like sore thumbs.

Updated special effects aside, I really enjoyed watching this movie again, for the first time in several years. I still think it is a great movie.
