Greer decides in the wake of his visit to the gallery on night of Nola's debut that he wants more from his relationship with her. He tries calling and texting but she doesn't respond. She is down in the dumps over a review she got from Julies Kemper, a critic who was also at the show. He's the one who approached her and asked her about her work. She didn't know how to respond. Nola hides in her brownstone and ignores everyone who reaches out to her.
Jamie thinks about Nola and tries to reconcile with Cheryl, his wife. He remembers the day they met. He tries reaching out to Nola but she doesn't respond.
Greer breaks the rules and shows up at Nola's building unannounced. He sweet talks her into going out with him to see a movie, the 1934 version of Imitation of Life. They go to a restaurant afterwards. Greer tries to work his magic on Nola. It doesn't work.
Jamie dreams that he is in a bar. Nola is there but Cheryl is too. Joe, the bartender, is serving Jamie shots as the piano player plays One For My Baby (And One More for the Road). The scene ends with Jamie collapsing.
The episode ends with Nola visiting Shemekka who is still in the hospital. They apologize to one another.
Thoughts
Joe, the bartender in Jamie's dream is played by Spike Lee. Mars shows up in this episode but it is a very brief moment. Greer drops a bit of information about his parents. His mother is French and White. His father was a Black Panther.
I don't think this episode stands by itself very well but I really like it as a part of the larger tapestry. I'm not sure what to make of the dream sequence. Maybe it is trying to say something about the balancing act that Jamie is trying to maintain. I don't think that there is any clear indication that this is Jamie's dream but I don't see how it could be anyone else's dream.
