Captain Harlock returns from space in 2977. The Earth is in bad shape. People no longer work but spend most of their time watching TV. Captain Harlock infuriates Earth's military forces by robbing transport ships from other planets that produce food for Earth. He is also blamed for the destruction of many of Earth's observatories but at least one scientist doesn't believe that he is responsible for destroying the observatories.
Harlock leaves his ship to visit 7-year-old Mayu. It is her birthday. He gives her an ocarina which he carved himself. They place flowers on her mother's grave. Earth's military has prepared for this moment. They arrest him. Commander Kiruta is ready to execute Captain Harlock when he is saved by his spaceship. Captain Harlock leaves Earth in his spaceship but the episode ends with him observing something headed for Earth.

This show is from the same era as UFO Robo Grendizer.
I've watched the first dozen or more episodes of this show before. I wasn't blown away by them but I want to give the show another try. I'm not expecting to love it. I'm just curious to see what it does and where it goes.
This episode lays some of the ground work but there will be more developments and revelations in the next episode.
