starring Sidney Poitier, Bill Cosby, Harry Belafonte, Calvin Lockhart
directed by Sidney Poitier
104 minutes
Steve Jackson (Sidney Poitier) and Wardell Franklin (Bill Cosby) are held up at gun point at Madame Zenobia's, an after hours club, along with the rest of the patrons. The next day Steve discovers that the lottery ticket that he bought earlier than week and had in his wallet is worth $50,000.
Steve and Wardell look for the masked men who held up the after hours joint. Their search leads them to cross paths with a few crime bosses including Little Seymour, Geechie Dan Beauford (Harry Belafonte), and Silky Slim (Calvin Lockhart).
Steve and Wardell convince Geechie Dan to form an alliance with Silky Slim so that they can get their hands on $300,000 in diamonds. There are no diamonds but Wardell and Steve keep up the farce long enough and drop enough clues to get the police chasing the two gangsters.
Thoughts
I've known of this movie for years but this was my first time watching it.
There are a number of actors (aside from the stars named above) in this movie whom I recognized to one degree or another including Flip Wilson, Richard Pryor, Roscoe Lee Browne, and Lincoln Kilpatrick.
I almost didn't recognize Harry Belafonte at first. He did something to change his appearance that made him look heavier than I think he was at the time.
I enjoyed this movie for what it was. I wouldn't say it was great but it was a fun movie to watch. It isn't very serious.
