Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 1.05

Captive Pursuit

A ship comes through the wormhole from the Gamma Quadrant. The pilot reluctantly accepts help from Chief O'Brien and the crew of the space station. He calls himself Tosk but won't give O'Brien or anyone else any more information than that.

Security detects Tosk accessing the space station's network. Odo suspects that Tosk was attempting to get into the weapons locker. Tosk is locked up in a security cell.

Another ships arrives from the Gamma Quadrant. The commander of that unit demands that Sisko hand over Tosk. He explains that they are hunting Tosk. It is what Tosk was bred for, to be hunted. Sisko finds the situation distasteful but doesn't see what he can do about it.

O'Brien urges Tosk to ask the Federation for sanctuary but Tosk refuses. Tosk wants to die a noble death. Tosk would not be able to do that if he was to live the rest of his life protected by the Federation.

O'Brien pulls a fast one on the hunters. He interferes with the transfer of Tosk to the hunters. This gives Tosk a chance to fight back and escape in his ship, which had by then been repaired.

Thoughts

This is very much a Chief O'Brien episode. Sisko, Kira, Dax, Quark, and Bashir are all in it but O'Brien gets the bulk of the screen time and the lines.

I thought it was a little odd how the computer aboard Deep Space Nine told Tosk where the weapons were stored. It denied him access to the weapons but I would think it should also have denied his request to know where they were kept.

This episode started kind of slow. It wasn't until the hunters showed up that it got interesting. I found the final act to be quite moving.
