Un Village Français 5.12

Un sens au monde
or A Meaning to the World

Marchetti convinces that Marguerite that he will have Lucienne and Jules arrested. He tells her horror stories about what will happen to Marguerite when the Germans get their hands on her. Marguerite, feeling as thought she doesn't have a choice, agrees to tell him where he can find Antoine in return for passes that will get them to Switzerland. Marchetti agrees and she shows him where the Resistance camp is on a map.

Chassagne and Marcel talk in the time that they have left. There is no reprieve for them. They are marched out into the yard. Marcel gives Müller a note for Gustave. Marcel and Chassagne smoke a cigarette and then they are killed by firing squad.

The French police are ready to move in on the Resistance but Servier has second thoughts about it. His wife convinces him that the Germans are losing the war and that it won't look good if they are the ones who capture or kill Antoine and the other Resistance fighters. He orders Marchetti and the others to back off and then goes and tells the Germans what they know.

Marguerite gives Jules and Lucienne the passes. He knows how she got them. He makes plans to kill her but in the end he can't bring himself to do it. The Resistance sends someone to kill Marguerite. Jules tells Lucienne to tell Marguerite to leave immediately but Lucienne gets distracted by two girls at the school who are fighting over a doll. Marguerite is killed by the Resistance.

The Resistance fighters seem to be boxed in but when the French police backs off it gives them a chance. They make it to the bottom of a big cliff. Anselme and Antoine climb up with a rope and then help others to make their way up. There are just four of them at the bottom of the cliff when the Germans show up. Claude, Thierry, and the other two make their way back to the camp when they realize that the Germans are close by. The Germans catch up to them at the camp site as the episode ends.

Thoughts

Raymond, Marie, and Jeanine are not in this episode but most everyone else is, some more so than others.

Presumably Claude and Thierry are dead but that isn't explicitly clear from the way the episode ends. Presumably the play died with Claude.

The ending to this season reminds me of the ending of the season where the Germans closed in on the people at the farm.

This was good. It wasn't upbeat in the least bit but it was good. There were some parts of this season that dragged but the last few episodes didn't drag in the least bit.
