Genesis of the Daleks - Part Five
The Doctor gives Davros details of all future Dalek defeats rather than see his friends tortured. Sarah and Harry are taken away and locked up after the session is over. Davros asks the Doctor to stay behind so that they can talk.
The Doctor tries to talk Davros out of continuing with his schemes. Davros refuses and tells the Doctor that his plans are for the good of the universe. The Doctor tricks Davros and gets the upperhand momentarily but Nyder returns and clubs that Doctor into submission.
Sarah and Harry are thrown into a detention cell with Gharman. He tells them about his plans to overthrow Davros. They escape from the cell with some help from Kavell, one of the other scientists. The resistance, Gharman's side, takes over.
Davros is given a choice and he decides to submit to the majority. He only asks that they put the decision to end the Dalek project to a vote. Gharman agrees not realizing that Davros has recalled the Daleks from the Thal dome.
The Doctor finds some explosives and detonators. He sets them up in the laboratory where the creatures who will be placed in the Dalek units are being grown. The episode ends as the Doctor emerges from the lab with one of the creatures wrapped around his neck, strangling him.
Thoughts
I remembered the cliffhanger at the end of the this episode very vividly although I don't recall being frightened by it when I first saw it.
Tom Baker (Doctor Who), Elisabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane Smith), and David Maloney (director) are on the commentary track for this episode.
I am of course biased when it comes to Genesis of the Daleks. It was one of the first Doctor Who stories that I saw. I was all of 12 years old at the time. Having said all that, Genesis of the Daleks really does deserve all the praise it gets. Every single episode feels tight. There is no flab.
