Doctor Who (1963) 12.05.01

Revenge of the Cybermen - Part One

The Doctor, Sarah, and Harry arrive in the aft control room on Space Station Nerva. It is much earlier in time than when they left. The TARDIS isn't there. The Doctor decides that they should have a look around while they wait for the TARDIS to catch up to them.

They head for the forward control room. Walking through the hallways they discover dead bodies everywhere. They encounter a locked door. The Doctor unlocks it which trips a silent alarm.

The only other humans aboard Nerva are talking things over when the alarm goes off. Three of them are crew and the other is a civilian. Commander Stevenson and Lester take weapons and head for the forward control room.

A cybermat attacks and bites Warner, the third crewman, who is on duty in the forward control room. Kellman, the civilian. enters the forward control room and destroys some of the audio recordings. The Doctor and his friends show up soon after that. Stevenson and Lester stop them before they get to the forward control room.

Stevenson is ready to kill Warner, thinking that he has the plague and that by killing him it will stop the plague from spreading. Kellman tries to convince Stevenson that the Doctor and his friends brought the plague with them and that they should be killed.

Cooler heads prevail and the Doctor convinces Stevenson not to execute them or Warner. Harry examines Warner but there isn't anything he can do for him. The Doctor is puzzled by the situation. It seems familiar but he can't place his finger on why. Warner later dies.

Kellman spies on the others while they are trying to figure out what happened to Warner. Stevenson shows the Doctor a nearby asteroid, Voga. The Doctor recognizes it and it jogs his memory. He thinks that it is Cybermen that are behind the plague or whatever it is that has struck down most of the crew of Nerva.

Kellman sends a secret message that the Cybermen receive.

The Doctor suspects that Kellman is up to something. He sneaks into Kellman's quarters when he's not there. He finds some of Kellman's gadgets. Kellman returns while the Doctor is hiding under his bed. Kellman sets a trap for him. The episode ends with the Doctor trying to escape from Kellman's quarters which are filling with smoke, while Sarah is fighting off a Cybermat.

Thoughts

Producer Philip Hinchcliffe, Elisabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane Smith), Production Designer Roger Murray Leach, and David Collings (Vorus, leader of the Vogans) are on the commentary track for this episode.

This is a decent opening chapter. I know I've seen this episode before but I don't remember much about it. It has probably been 30 years or more since I last saw it. I'm a little unsure what's going on with the Vogans. There is some mention of a war between the Vogans and the Cybermen but I think that it is supposed to be some time in the past.

Notes

Ronald Leigh-Hunt played the part of Commander Stevenson. He played the part of Radnor in 6.05 The Seeds of Death, the only other story in which he appeared. He also appeared in two episodes of The Avengers, one of which was titled The Cybernauts.

William Marlowe played the part of Lester. He played the part of Harry Mailer in 8.02 The Mind of Evil, the only other story in which he has appeared. His third wife was Kismet Delgado who was married to Roger Delgado (The Master) up until the time he died in a car accident.

Alec Wallis played the part of Warner. He was also in 9.03 The Sea Devils, the only other story in which he appeared. He played a different character in that story.
