starring Gene Hackman, Danny DeVito, Delroy Lindo, Sam Rockwell, Rebecca Pidgeon, Ricky Jay
written and directed by David Mamet
107 minutes
Joe (Gene Hackman) and Fran Moore (Rebecca Pidgeon), Bobby Blane (Delroy Lindo), and Pinky (Ricky Jay) rob a jewelry store. Joe's face is caught on camera during the robbery. He and Fran are ready to leave the country, head to Argentina, but Mickey Bergman (Danny DeVito) the fence to whom they turn over the stolen loot has other plans. He wants Joe to do another job for him before he will pay Joe and his crew for the jewelry store heist.
Joe refuses at first but eventually agrees to do the job. Mickey insists that Jimmy Silk (Sam Rockwell), his nephew, be part of the crew.
Things do not according to plan. Not everyone survives to the end of the movie. Joe and Fran's marriage is tested. Mickey grows increasingly agitated with Joe's behavior.
Thoughts
I've seen all six of the actors named in my summary in other films, some within the past year and some not. This is the third film I have seen that David Mamet directed and at least the 10th one I have seen that he wrote or co-wrote.
There are a lot of twists and turns in the plot. I'm not sure that they all work but the movie keeps moving at a brisk pace. I thought that all the performances were good. I was a bit surprised by the way that Fran switched sides. Maybe she was looking for the right opportunity to ditch Joe from the beginning or just saw an opportunity in teaming up with Jimmy Silk.
I enjoyed this movie. It's a solidly enjoyable watch but I wouldn't call it great. I might have enjoyed it more if I had borrowed the DVD from the library. I watched it on Pluto TV and there must have been a dozen commercial breaks. The movie stopped playing with 10 minutes to go. It took me several minutes to get back to where I was in the film once I got Pluto TV working again. It took me altogether about 140 minutes to watch this 107 minute movie.
