Melora
Ensign Melora Pazlar joins the crew of the space station. She comes from Elaysia, a world with considerably lower gravity than that on Deep Space Nine. She is forced to get around in a motorized wheelchair. She takes great offense when anyone tries to preemptively step in and help her or treat her as different.
Ensign Pazlar is scheduled to do some survey work in the Gamma Quadrant. She wants to go alone but Commander Sisko insists that Lieutenant Dax go with her.
Doctor Bashir takes Ensign Pazlar out for dinner at a Klingon restaurant. She demonstrates her command of Klingon and appreciation for Klingon cuisine.
Melora injures herself the next day as she is getting ready to leave on the survey mission with Dax. She is angry with herself but then she invites Julian into her quarters. She allows him to experience the low gravity field that was established within her quarters and then they make out.
Fallit Kot, an old associate of Quark's, tells the Ferengi that he’s going to kill him. Quark does what he can to make Kot happy. Quark turns to Odo for help but Odo says he can’t do anything about it because Kot has yet to commit a crime.
Doctor Bashir discovers a treatment that might allow Ensign Pazlar to abandon her motorized wheelchair. She agrees to it but later (after a couple doses of the treatment) she has second thoughts and decides not to pursue it.
Thoughts
Major Kira barely appeared in this episode. Jake Sisko was not in this episode.
Daphne Ashbrook played the part of Melora Pazlar. Three years after this episode first aired she played the Eighth Doctor's companion in the Doctor Who TV movie.
I don’t hate this episode but I’m also not all that crazy about it. Quark's part of the story felt very tacked on and generic. The part at the end (which I didn't mention in my summary) with Fallit Kot didn't do anything for me.
