The Twilight Zone (1959) 1.07

The Lonely

starring Jack Warden, Jean Marsh
directed by Jack Smight

Corry (Jack Warden) lives alone on asteroid. He was sent there because he killed someone’s back on Earth. He was convicted of murder even though he claimed it was self defense. He is 4 years into a 50 year sentence. A supply ship stops every 3 months to bring him supplies.

Corry is lonely. He can’t stand living there by himself with only a few minutes of human contact every few months.

The next time the supply ship comes it brings him a special package, a robot named Alicia (Jean Marsh) that looks and acts just like a woman. Corry rejects Alicia at first but over time he mellows and grows to love her and having her there.

A year later when the supply ship arrives it brings good news, his case gas been reviewed and he has been granted a pardon. They can’t stay long. He can’t take much with him. There’s no room aboard the space ship for Alicia.

Thoughts

This was a good one. The set up is fairly simple. A lot of it came down to the performance by Jack Warden.

This is the first of two episodes of this show in which Jack Warden appeared. I’ve seen him in at least a dozen movies. I’ve also seen him in an episode of The Invaders, 1.11 The Ivy Curtain.

This is the only episode of this show in which Jean Marsh appeared. I've also seen her in Upstairs, Downstairs.

This is the first of four episodes of this show that Jack Smight directed. He also directed four episodes of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour.
