Atomic Shakespeare
Padua, 1593. Lucentio (Burt) wants to marry Bianca (Agnes) but her father won’t let her marry until Kate (Maddie), her older sister, is married. Kate is a bit wild and intimidating. The men of Padua are not interested in her but then Petruchio (David) comes to town and Lucentio sees an opportunity.
Petruchio gets Kate’s father’s blessings to marry her but Kate is very resistant to Petruchio’s attempts to woo her.
Petruchio and Kate get married even though (a) she is bound and gagged at the time and (b) he shows up three hours late for the ceremony.
The marriage starts out rocky but eventually Kate grows to appreciate Petruchio. They return together to Padua for the marriage of Bianca and Lucentio.
This episode was fun in places but I feel as though it overstayed it’s welcome. I’m not crazy about it or The Taming of the Shrew, the play that is the backbone of the plot of this episode.
Colm Meaney has a small part in this episode, the only episode of this show in which he appeared. I know him best from his role as Chief O’Brien on Star Trek (TNG and DS9). I’ve also seen him in a few movies including Con Air (1997).
