The Founder (2016)

The Founder (2016)

starring Michael Keaton, Nick Offerman, John Carroll Lynch
directed by John Lee Hancock

115 minutes

Salesman Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton) sees an opportunity in the restaurant run by Dick (Nick Offerman) and Mac McDonald (John Caroll Lynch). He convinces them to let him franchise the business. Kroc starts in Illinois. He runs into some obstacles as he grows the franchises from one to a few to a dozen to hundreds. Some of the obstacles are due to the contract that he signed with the McDonalds brothers. With some help from others he eventually grows much bigger than them and buys them out.

Thoughts

In addition to the three leads there are a number of other actors (Laura Dern, Lina Cardellini, BJ Novak, Patrick Wilson) in this film that I recognized from other things I have watched.

The irony of the title of this movie is that Ray Kroc didn't start McDonalds. He made it a nationwide phenomenon but it was the McDonalds brothers who started it.

Ray Kroc is the main character and the protagonist when the movie opens but by the end he seems more like a bad guy. I would not say that the McDonalds brothers are the heroes of this film. It has no hero. This is not propaganda or an exact retelling of the facts. It is an even handed and well made movie, which is more than can be said about Ray Kroc.
