The Station Agent (2003)

The Station Agent (2003)

starring Peter Dinklage, Patricia Clarkson, Bobby Cannavale, Michelle Williams
written and directed by Tom McCarthy

88 minutes

Fin (Peter Dinklage) inherits a railroad station in Newfoundland, NJ. It is a small town, off the beaten path and not on the main railway lines. He doesn't want to talk to anyone but over time he gets to know some of the other residents of the town: Olivia (Patricia Clarkson), an artist who is still in mourning over the son she lost two years earlier; Joe (Bobby Cannavale), the operator of a coffee truck; and Emily (Michelle Williams), the town's librarian.

Thoughts

This movie is about a found family. It is very indie and has a familiar feel to it. I think that's partly the music and partly dues to the way it was shot and edited together. I think it also has something to do with the relationships. It is for the most part very mellow. Even the moments when things seem to come to a head are fairly muted.

I don't love this movie. It has a nice feel to it but towards the end it felt like it was forcing things at me. It wanted to wrap things up with a bow but I don't think that was as necessary as it felt like it seemed to think it was.
