Doctor Who (2005) 1.01

Rose

Creepy looking plastic men attack Rose Tyler in the basement of the department store where she works. A stranger, identifying himself only as the Doctor, saves her from the creepy plastic men and helps her get out of the building.

The building blows up, minutes after Rose parts ways with the Doctor. She goes home and sleeps in the next morning. Soon after she gets up she finds the Doctor at the front door of the apartment where she lives with her mum.

He is looking for something related to the creepy plastic men and didn’t expect to meet Rose again. The Doctor finds what he’s looking for, a plastic arm. It attacks first him and then Rose but he manages to deactivate it.

The Doctor leaves. Rose, with some help from her boyfriend Mickey, goes looking for information about the Doctor. She meets Clive who has all sorts of information about the Doctor that links him to the assassination of JFK and the Titanic.

A mobile plastic trash can captures Mickey while Rose is talking to Clive. The Doctor returns and points out what Rose has failed to notice, the Mickey has been replaced by a plastic copy.

Rose gets her first look at the inside of the TARDIS. She helps the Doctor to locate the Nestene consciousness which controls all the creepy plastic men. The Doctor tries to negotiate with it but it isn’t interested in talking. A couple of the creepy plastic men capture the Doctor. Rose finds Mickey, rescues the Doctor, and by chance kills the Nestene consciousness.

The episode ends with Rose leaving with the Doctor in the TARDIS.

Thoughts

I picked up the DVD set for the first season at the library today. I will probably watch a few more episodes before returning it. I doubt that I will watch the entire season straight through over the next few months.

This is not the first time I have watched this episode but it has been more than 18 years since I last saw it. I know that I watched the second season in late 2008 but I'm not sure when or how I watched the first season. It might have been on the SciFi Channel but I'm not sure.

Mickey, Rose's mum, and Clive are the only other real characters in this episode. All of them were good. The special effects have not aged well but they are better than most of the special effects from the classic series.

This was fun. I enjoyed it but it wasn't brilliant. I don't have any strong recollections of this season outside of a few moments from a few episodes. I have no clue as to which episode from this season was my favorite back when I first watched it. I'm hoping that there are episodes better than this one. I'm not a big fan of bad guys who are just mindless killers, which is more or less what this episode served up.
