Desperation! The Broken Zangetsu
Sado is down for the count and almost dead. Eighth Squad Captain Shunsui Kyōraku decides to leave Sado there and orders Nanao Ise, Eighth Squad's lieutenant, to have him transported to a jail cell.
Ichigo runs from 11th Squad Captain Kenpachi Zaraki in fear. He tries stopping to fight but each time he stops and fights he feels the fear return. It isn't until he senses that Sado is near death that he remembers why he is there and how he has people counting on him. It is only then that he finds the strength to stand and fight.
Ichigo thinks he sees an opening, a way he can win but Zaraki breaks Zangetsu, Ichigo's Zanpakuto. Ichigo collapses. Kenpachi loses interest in the fight and starts to leave. Ichigo struggles. He wants to rise to his feet but then he sees the embodiment of Zangetsu walking towards him.
Thoughts
Ichigo's friends, aside from Sado, only appear in this episode as he thinks about them. They do not get their own moments to shine.
I enjoyed this episode but they are still building up to something. From the preview for the next episode it appears that the fight with Zaraki is not over yet.
There are just three episodes left in this season. I don't recall where this season ends and where the next one begins. I also don't remember much from here to the end of the next season except that the story will change setting after the third season. I'm pretty sure that Ichigo has another duel with Byakuya Kuchiki before the end of the third season but I don't have any clear memories of it.
