90 minutes
This documentary celebrates the 40th anniversary of Star Trek by looking back the five of the six shows that had aired up to the time this film was made. There is no mention or acknowledgement of the existence of the 1970s Star Trek cartoon. There are lots of clips from the five shows (Star Trek, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise) that did merit recognition.
Several members of the casts of the various Star Trek shows appeared in this documentary including Leonard Nimoy, George Takei, Nichelle Nichols, Patrick Stewart, Johnathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, Avery Brooks, Armin Shimerman, Kate Mulgrew, and Garrett Wang. Writers, producers, and other crew members that appeared in this movie included Robert Justman, Rick Berman, Brannon Braga, Michael and Denise Okuda.
Intermixed with looks back at the shows was coverage of a 40th anniversary auction of Star Trek memorabilia held by Christie's in Oct 2006. Michael and Denise Okuda were brought in to help sort through the items available for auction and whittled it down to about 1000 items. The total amount spent by winning bidders totaled over $7.1 million. There were about 100 items that went for $10,000 or more and 9 that sold for over $100,000. I was gob smacked by how much some people paid for some items including some of the large scale models of ships like the Enterprise D.
This movie was included as an extra with the DVD set of the first season of Star Trek (1966) but can also be found on YouTube. More information about the auction can be found by searching for Christie's Star Trek Auction on the internet.
Is it essential viewing? No. I have mixed feelings about it.
