No Ordinary Heist (2026)

No Ordinary Heist (2026)

starring Eddie Marsan, Éanna Hardwicke
directed by Colin McIvor

99 minutes

Richard Murray (Eddie Marsan) and Barry McKenna (Éanna Hardwicke) employees of the Bank of Northern Ireland are given little choice after Richard's wife and Barry's mother are kidnapped by thugs who demand that they rob the bank for them. Murray, the manager of the bank, and McKenna, who works in the vault, come from very different backgrounds and do not get along.

Thoughts

I saw this film as part of the 2026 Capital Irish Film Festival at the AFI Silver Theater. There was a Q&A session with the director and producer, after they showed the movie.

This story takes place in 2004 and is based on actual events.

This is a tense thriller. It felt like some things were glossed over a little bit and that Richard and Barry got incredibly lucky that they didn't get caught by the bank's security guards, on more than one occasion. On the whole I thought this movie was very good. Not perfect but as I said, very good. When I think about it now, in retrospect I can see some holes in the plot but I was very invested in it as I was watching it.
