The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House 1.01

Change

Kiyo and Sumire, friends, both 16 years old, move to Kyoto where they hope to become maiko, apprentice geishas. Sumire takes to the training very well. Kiyo does not. She instead finds herself applying her cooking skills when the middle-aged woman who usually cooks for the house (where they live with several Maiko and Maiko hopefuls) cannot do her job.

Thoughts

This show is based on a manga called Kiyo in Kyoto: From the Maiko House. There was also an anime series based on the manga. The anime series has the same name as the manga and consisted of 12 episodes. This live-action series consists of 9 episodes. The manga lasted for just over 8 years and was collected in 30 tankōbon (collected editions). I have not read the manga or watched the anime.

I'm a bit out of my depth here. I paused the program a couple time to look up terms which were used without enough context for me to figure out what they meant.

Makanai is a Japanese word used to refer to a meal cooked for the staff of a restaurant or the person preparing such a meal. The correct term for the Maiko hopefuls might be Minarai. They might even have used it in the episode and it might have slipped past me.

I enjoyed this episode very much. I thought the performances were all quite good. It isn't melodramatic. The show doesn't go out of its way to explain things.
