Un Village Français 6.12

Libération
or Liberation

6 Sep 1940

Antoine gets Marchetti to the police station. It isn't long before word gets out that Marchetti has been apprehended. Bériot is ordered to drive him to Dijon for trial but the people of Villeneuve want him tried in Villeneuve. Bériot manages to get Marchetti out of town in a car. The mob turns on Antoine and kills the remaining militia men who were not executed. Most of them are gunned down but Alban is hung in the schoolyard.

Daniel Larcher and Hortense try to get away but they are stopped by another mob. The mob knocks him down but forgets about him when they recognize Hortense. She is dragged through the streets with another woman who is similarly accused of sleeping with German soldiers. They are taken to the schoolyard. Gustave is there. She begs him to help her but he spits in her face. Someone takes a pair of scissors and cuts off all the hair on her head. Lucienne is there and watches it happen without saying a word.

Arrestations
or Arrests

Suzanne learns that her husband is thinking of moving to Brittany with their daughter. The only way to get him to stay is to reunite with him but she has no interest in doing that. She goes to work for Edmond. He asks her to dig up some dirt on Bériot. She turns to Loriot for help with this task.

Rita reveals to Ézéchiel that Marchetti is hiding in their apartment. He wants Marchetti out but agrees to let him stay for the day, until someone comes to get him.

or The Law of Desire

The trial continues but things go sideways after Daniel Larcher reveals that he knows about the 14 coffins. Bériot decides that in order to make like the verdict wasn't decided in advance they must let four or five of the men off. Anselme balks at this suggestion and quits.

Atoine and Suzanne stay on. Bériot's assistant becomes the third judge. They pardon the five youngest members of the militia, including Alban. Geneviève, Alban's sister, is grateful to Antoine but, now that he knows who she is, he doesn't want to see her anymore. He urges her to forget about him.

Le Crépuscule avant la nuit
or The Dusk Before the Night

Bériot talks to Anselme, Suzanne, and Antoine in private and tells them about what he was ordered to do. They reluctantly agree to find the men of the militia guilty. The verdict will be announced the next day and the executions will occur soon thereafter.

Bériot goes to see Raymond Schwartz to get wood for the coffins. He doesn't tell Schwartz what it is for but Schwartz figures out what is happening. He gets Bériot to promise that Jeanine won't get anything worse than a fine and in return he promises to keep his mouth shut.

Le Procès
or The Trial

Alban prevents Xavier from detonating the explosives in the basement of the school. The representatives of the various factions come together with Bériot presiding and deciding that a court martial must occur that very day to try the 14 members of the militia captured at the school. Bériot appoints Anselme, Antoine, and Suzanne to be the judges and Edmond (leader of the CDL) to be the prosecutor. Bériot convinces Doctor Larcher to be the attorney for the defense by promising him that he will go easy on Hortense.

Rita tries to find food for her son. Edmond says he might be able to find her some food if she joins the communist party. She turns down his offer. She runs into Ezechial Cohen while she is searching for food. He points her in the direction of the black market. She ultimately ends up prostituting herself for food for her son.

Une explosion
or An Explosion

Anselme is ready to order an attack once everything is in place. Antoine objects. He thinks they should wait. Anselme pulls rank and says that he's in charge. Raoul Germain, Marie's son shows up with some other troops that are brought in to support the planned assault on the school. Anselme and Antoine tell him about what happened. 

Doctor Larcher finds out that Kurt has type O blood. Lucienne objects but Kurt agrees to providing a transfusion to help save De Kervern. The transfusion happens. Kurt has a heart attack but Doctor Larcher manages to revive him.

Le Groupe
or The Group

Lucienne is very happy to have found Kurt. She does everything she can to keep him alive. She focuses on him to the point that she doesn't notice when the other German soldier, the one Doctor Larcher was brought in to save, dies. She takes Kurt to her bedroom and hides him there. She does her best to change his bandages. Her father finds out about it. He warns her that it won't be good for her if anyone finds out that Kurt is German. She has a plan for how to deal with that.

The Germans who are occupying the school depart very early the next morning. No one sees them leave. The Resistance walks into town, led by De Kervern, Antoine, and Anselme. They run into the militia who are there to get the trucks that Schneider promised them. A gun fight erupts. De Kervern is wounded and taken prisoner. The militia take him to the school which they claim for their own. Doctor Larcher was getting ready to leave but they make him stick around and bandage up De Kervern.

Un Village Français 6.05

L'Homme sans nom
or The Man Without a Name

Schneider, the German commander, orders Blanchon, the commander of the French militia to kill the Jewish prisoners. Blanchon refuses. Schneider is about to order to tell his men to kill the prisoners when Marchetti shoots Schneider point blank. Chaos erupts at the train station. Marchetti grabs Rita and their son and gets them out of there.

Hortense gets questioned by the American commander. She sticks to her story that she just met the German with whom she was picked up. They lock her up with several other women, one of whom is Jeanine Schwartz. They talk. Hortense feels better but before long Jeanine betrays Hortense, revealing to the Americans who she is and the identity of the man with whom she was picked up.

Sur le quai
or On the Platform

Anselme, Raymond, and the others find the bodies still hanging in the schoolyard, including Marie's. Antoine goes to take her down but Anselme insists that it's his fault that it came to this and that he should not be the one to do it. Raymond takes Marie's body for burial even though Anselme insists that he shouldn't. Before the are done taking the bodies down they receive word that it was Marchetti who hanged Marie.

Heinrich and Hortense try to get through a German checkpoint but someone spots them. They are pulled aside. Heinrich is made to dig a grave for the two of them. They are about to get executed when some Americans show up and kill the German soldiers. Heinrich, speaking in English, claims that he is with the anti-fascist underground.

Un Village Français 6.03

La Corde
or The Rope

27 Aug 1944

Marie is on her way back to the bridge with two American soldiers when they get attacked. One of the soldiers is killed. Marie takes off running while the other American stays and returns fire. She makes it most of the way back to the bridge but she's ambushed by a few German soldiers and taken prisoner.

Marchetti and Servier try negotiating with the Resistance. They agree to release Antoine and Suzanne in return for promises of safety for their families and a fair trial. The Resistance led by Anselme finally agrees to their terms.

Un Village Français 6.02

Le Pont
or The Bridge

26 Aug 1944

The Americans arrive during the night, but just a few of them. They bring explosives and want to blow up the bridge for reasons that later become apparent. The explosives are set with the help of Marie and the other Resistance fighters. Something goes wrong and the explosives don't detonate. Everyone gets pinned down by a sniper while they are trying to figure out what wrong with the explosives.

Janvier survives the attack on his home, but just barely. They take him to the police station and call for Dr. Larcher. When Daniel gets there and examines Janvier he can tell it doesn't look good. It looks to him like one of the bullets hit Janvier's spine. Janvier needs to be taken to a hospital but under the current circumstances that's impossible. He gives Janvier a shot of morphine and a priest comes to give Janvier last rites.

Un Village Français 6.01

Paris libéré 
or Paris Liberated

25 Aug 1944

The Resistance is split over what to do now that France is in the process of being liberated. The Allied armies have yet to reach Villeneuve. Antoine, Suzanne, and Raymond want to attack the jail and liberate the prisoners that are held there but everyone else is against it.

Janvier, the local French militia leader, and his troops remain loyal to the Vichy government. Janvier takes some of his men and murders Vernet, a former member of the resistance, and his family. Suzanne and Antoine witness the attack. She decides that they must avenge the dead family. She and Antoine, with help from a couple others, come up with a plan.
