Yellow Canary (1963)

Yellow Canary (1963)

starring Pat Boone, Barbara Eden, Steve Forrest
written by Rod Serling
directed by Buzz Kulik

93 minutes

Pop singer Andy Paxton (Pat Boone) and his wife Lissa Paxton (Barbara Eden) are on the verge of getting a divorce when their infant son is kidnapped. They quickly discover that it might have been an inside job perpetrated by either Baker, Andy's righthand man, or Hup (Steve Forrest), Andy's bodyguard. They call the police but Andy insists on handling most of the dealings with the kidnappers himself. Eventually Andy finds a clue that leads him to the location where his son is being held.

Thoughts

I saw this movie as part of the 2026 Noir City DC film festival at the AFI Silver Theater. I had not seen it before.

This is not noir, in the least bit. Most web sites have it labeled as a thriller. The musical numbers by Pat Boone were not to my tastes.

According to my research the film was the victim of cost cutting measures. It was originally supposed to be shot over 10 weeks but that was cut down to 10 days.

I yawned several times while watching this movie. The acting wasn't anything to write home about. Pat Boone was by far the worst of the lot. The plot wasn't very good either. Honestly this probably should have been just shown on TV.

Notes

I have not seen Pat Boone, Barbara Eden, or Steve Forrest in any other movies. There are a few actors in this movie that I have seen before in movies or TV shows including Jack Klugman, Jesse White, and Jeff Corey.

The story for this movie was based on the novel Evil Come Evil Go by Bob Wade and H. William Miller. The screenplay was written by Rod Serling. I have seen at least one movie and several episodes of television that Serling wrote.
