starring Elliott Gould, Nina van Pallandt, Sterling Hayden
written by Leigh Brackett
directed by Robert Altman
112 minutes
Private investigator Philip Marlowe (Elliott Gould) works more than one investigation as he struggles to avoid bodily injury, figure out what happened to his friend Terry Lennox, and find out what the different cases have to do with one another.
Thoughts
I saw this movie as part of the 2026 Noir City DC film festival at the AFI Silver Theater. I had not seen it before. It is very much noir.
I was not very taken by this movie. There was something about the way that Gould played Marlowe that just didn't speak to me. He was a little too laid back, for the most part. It wasn't what I was expecting and it never felt right to me. There was nothing else about the movie that made up for Gould's performance and made me like the movie.
Notes
I have seen Elliott Gould, Nina van Pallandt, and Sterling Hayden in movies before. Other actors who were in this movie that I have seen before include Henry Gibson, David Arkin, David Carradine, Carl Gottlieb, George Wyner, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The screenplay was written by Leigh Brackett and is based on the novel of the same name by Raymond Chandler. I have seen a couple other movies that Leigh Brackett wrote. I have seen a few other movies that were directed by Robert Altman.
