UFO Robo Grendizer 1.26

Skull Moon Base Successive Attacks

or Skullmoon Full Mobilization!
or Les bords de l'abîme (The Edges of the Abyss)

Kouji and Hayashima (one of Professor Umon's scientists) blast off in a rocket from a spot hear the Makiba Ranch. They are on a mission to start building a small space station. The plan, as Professor Umon explains, it to complete the station in three years. The professor explains this to Danbei, Banta, Goro, and Hikaru. They are very impressed.

The Vegans see what the humans are up to and decide to do something about it. They launch a saucer beast to attack the space station that Kouji and Hayashima are building. The Vegans also send minifos to Earth to watch for Grendizer to launch so that they can destroy him and his base of operations. Hayashima and Kouji head back to their spaceship when they see the saucer beast approaching but Kouji doesn't make it and winds up floating out in space without any way to get back to the spaceship.

Professor Umon launches an unmanned spaceship which has jamming technology. The minifos go after and destroy it. Duke Fleed uses that moment to launch and head out to rescue Kouji. The Vegans launch a couple more saucer beasts. One is sent to join the other in attacking Grendizer. The third is sent to Earth to destroy the spaceship that Hayashima is in which has returned to Earth.

The third saucer beast also attacks the space center and the ranch. Hikaru is injured in the attack while she is saving a rabbit. Danbei takes her to the space center for treatment. Kouji has just returned. Professor Umon says she needs a blood transfusion but no one is the right blood type.

Duke Fleed has to deal with all three saucer beasts. He defeats one of them but then the other two launch an overwhelming attack.

Thoughts

This is considered to be the last episode of the 1st season of Goldorak in France but according to the original Japanese broadcast schedule the next episode aired the following week.

I don't really understand why Skull Moon is in the title of this episode.

I like how they did something different in this episode. It came out of nowhere but I like Kouji and Hayashima's mission to outer space. It was destined to fail. There's no way the Vegans were going to overlook it but I still appreciate the attempt to strike out in a new direction. This is a pretty good episode for this show, which isn't exactly a glowing recommendation, unless you like this show.
