Invincible 1.03

Who You Calling Ugly?

The funeral for the Global Guardians happens. Cecil asks Robot to form a new team to replace the Global Guarbians. He takes the task seriously but some interpersonal drama between Rex Splode and Atom Eve causes problems. Eve walks in on Rex and Dupli Kate in the shower. Eve is selected for the new team, as are Rex Splode and Dupli Kate but Eve refuses to be on a team with them.

Eve confides her discovery to Invincible.

Mark sets up a study date with Amber. He gets a call from Cecil and has to leave just as the study date is beginning. Cecil sends him to Mt Rushmore where he teams up with Atom Eve to save the monument and some tourists from Doc Seismic.

Mark rushes back to his study date. He was only gone for an hour. Amber is unhappy but they manage to patch things up. Things don't go as well for Eve. Rex tries apologizing to her but she isn't interested in giving their relationship another chance. She goes to see Mark but he and Amber are making out in his bedroom.

The Mauler Twins escape from the GDA facility where they are imprisoned. It was partly thanks to their own efforts and partly thanks to a secret benefactor: Robot. One Mauler Twin sacrifices the other so that he can escape.

Damien Darkblood continues to investigate the murder of the Global Guardians. He questions Omni-Man but doesn't get much out of him. He tries asking Debbie Grayson but she doesn't know anything. She doesn't tell Nolan that Darkblood paid her a visit but Nolan can tell.

Thoughts

Nolan seems to be doing his best to act like it is business as usual, despite the loss of the Global Guardians. I can't stop thinking about the fact that he killed them. I don't recall how he gets found out but I know that eventually Debbie and Mark see him for who and what he truly is.

I still don't recall very much from what I read 15 years ago in the first 6 trades of Invincible. These episodes aren't bringing very much back. I no longer have the trades so I can't just pick them up and flip through them. One thing that did feel familiar is the betrayal by Robot. I don't recall what his motivations are or why he helped the Mauler Twins.

I didn't have any trouble sticking with this episode. It kept me engaged. It is a nice mix of action and drama.
