Superman wakes up. He can't seem to reach anyone on his communicator. The sun is red. His superpowers don't work. He assumes that he has been transported to another planet.
Superman packs up what he can find and heads out. He forges a sword for himself. He grows a beard. The car he takes eventually runs out of gas. He gets attacked by a pack of wolves with horns on their heads. He kills the leader of the pack and tames the others.
Superman follows the signal he is picking up from his communicator. It eventually leads him to the Watchtower which has crashed to Earth. There he is found by Vandal Savage who explains that he is thousands of years in the future. He's the only remaining human.
Vandal Savage takes Superman back to his home in what's left of Metropolis. He shows Superman the rocket ship he built but never used. Vandal Savage explains how the shape the Earth is in is all his own fault. He tried once again to take over the world, months after Superman disappeared. The device he used upset the gravitational balance of the solar system. That was 30,000 years in the past.
Vandal Savage regrets what he did, although Superman doesn't accept his remorse. Superman discovers that Vandal Savage also has a time machine but it's power source, the zero point generator, is missing. It was stolen by giant cockroaches. They recover the power source and use it to power up the time machine.
Vandal Savage tells Superman how to prevent him from building the device that destroyed most of the life on Earth. The key to it was a piece of White Dwarf Star that he stole from Ray Palmer. Superman steps into the time machine and arrives in time for the end of the fight with the super-villains.
Thoughts
This episode is almost entirely a Superman episode. His teammates (plus Lobo) don't show up until the very end of it.
Superman peruses the book shelves in Vandal Savage's home is sees the following books: Plato, Horticulture, Theoretical Physics, Cooking, Auto Repair, Art of War, Lukitch Diaries, Life Strategies: Coping with Yourself.
This episode got to me, as did the first part of this story. I knew it had a happy ending but it still moved me. I like this one. It isn't perfect but I think that it is better than average for this season of Justice League.
