The Liva and Henry Emory, an African America couple, move themselves and their two daughters from North Carolina to Compton, CA in hopes of a better life. They are the only Black family in a white neighborhood. Their neighbors don't want them there and start doing what they can to make the Emorys feel uncomfortable.
The women camp out in the street staring at the Emory's house. The men plan that night and decide to poison the Emory's dog. Livia is the most unnerved of the Emory family. She has a gun and loads it up while looking out the window.
Gracie Emory, the younger daughter wakes up in the middle of the night and goes looking for Sargeant, their dog. She walks out to the living room and is assaulted by a tall thin man.
The next morning Livia wakes Gracie and finds she has marks on her neck. Henry finds Sergeant dead, in the basement. Livia has taken about all she can. She grabs the gun and runs out in to the street and starts pointing it at people.
Thoughts
There is something that seems to have followed the Emory's from North Carolina to California. It might be embodied in the book that Gracie is reading, about a fictional character named Miss Vera.
The whole episode felt extremely tense. I was riveted and could not turn away from this episode. I don't know where they can take it from here. Are the next 9 episodes just going to be more of the same? Will there be any respite?
