The Phil Silvers Show 1.25

The Court Martial

Colonel Hall is determined to prove that Fort Baxter is a model of efficiency to General Rogers. The plan blows up after it is discovered that one of the men in Bilko's platoon is actually a monkey. The general attempts to court martial the monkey but that doesn't go exactly as planned.

Notes

There are two future academy award winners among the uncredited cast of this episode, George Kennedy and Jack Albertson

George Kennedy has a small uncredited role as an MP in this episode. I know Kennedy best from his role in the Naked Gun movies. This is his first screen credit and the first of 14 appearances he made on The Phil Silvers Show, all of them uncredited. His next appearance isn't until the 20th episode of the 3rd season of the show. He doesn't have any lines in this episode. I'm not sure about his other appearances on the show. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1968.

There is a commentary track for this episode recorded by George Kennedy. He talks a little bit about the episode but for the most part he talks about Phil Silvers. Kennedy worked for Silvers as a technical advisor.

John Boruff plays General Rogers. This is the first of 7 seven appearances he made on The Phil Silvers Show. He usually played a general.

Jack Albertson played the unnamed captain who was inspecting feet. This was his second of four appearances on the show, all of them uncredited. His prior appearance was in 1.20 The Transfer. He won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1969 and in the mid to late 1970s he was one of the leads on Chico and the Man, a show which I recall watching in reruns now and then in the 1980s.

Thoughts

This was an okay episode. I think I enjoyed it more while I was watching it than I do now that I look back on it. There was a lot packed into this episode. They don't get to the court martial until 20 minutes into this 25-minute episode. It felt very rushed.
