Doink
Midge gets a job working in a department store. She wants a job as an elevator operator but they won't hire her to do that. She instead gets a job at the makeup counter. Her mother is very disappointed. Her father is a bit surprised and has lots of questions.
Joel introduces Penny to his parents. They are not impressed.
Midge bombs on stage at the Gaslight. She's doesn't understand what went wrong. Midge turns to Herb Smith, a "professional", for help writing material. His help doesn't help. She bombs again. The jokes Smith writes are old and tired and seem as if they are written for someone else. Midge and Susie get into an argument after her second bombing run. Midge declares that she's done with comedy.
The next night Midge goes to a party thrown by one of her coworkers. She tells her coworkers stories and quickly has them all laughing.
Wallace Shawn plays the part of Herb Smith. He showed up recently on an episode of She's Gotta Have It. The role I know him best from is that of the "Inconceivable!" guy from The Princess Bride. He also appeared in an episode from Season 3.
For once I wasn't the only one not laughing by Midge's standup. Some of the dialogue feels as though it is supposed to be snappier than it actually is.
This episode felt like a step in the wrong direction. I didn't like it all that much. There was way too much focus on the standup comedy. That's part of the show but its not the part that I like.
