The Invaders 1.10

The Innocent

David Vincent is contacted by Captain Ross, US Air Force. Ross has first hand knowledge of the Invaders and wants Vincent to testify about what he has seen in front of the Peterson Committee of the US Congress. Vincent is in Maine trying to track down Nat Greeley who has one of the Invaders weapons, a disc. The Invaders are also looking for Greeley.

The Invaders get to Greeley. They capture his kid. He helps them to capture David Vincent. Magnus, the leader of the Invaders, makes an effort to convince Vincent that his people don't want to do the people of Earth any harm. He takes him on a trip in a space ship. The go to Santa Margaretta, a town where David used to live. He reconnects with Billy Stearns, an childhood friend, and Helen, an ex-girlfriend who wants to get back together with him. It all seems so good but Vincent senses that something is wrong.

It turns out that the whole trip is an illusion. They never went anywhere. Magnus just made him think they did using a high tech device. David tries to escape. Magnus wants him to call Captain Ross and tell him that he was mistaken, that he has nothing to tell the Peterson Committee. David refuses until they threaten to kill Nat Greely's family.

Vincent makes the phone call. The Invaders won't let him or Greely go. The Invaders force them to drink whiskey and then put them in a car which they send hurtling down a mountain road. The brakes don't work. The two men barely survive the experience.

Thoughts

This was a pretty good episode although its funny how the Invaders keep changing their approach to David Vincent. In the earliest episodes they just wanted to kill him. The attempt to convince him that they are only trying to help the Earth in this episode but when that doesn't work they resort to their old ways.

Notes

Captain Ross is played by Dabney Coleman. He does not have his trademark mustache and he has considerably more hair than I am used to seeing him with. I know him best from a number of movies including Tootsie, War Games, The Man with One Red Shoe, and numerous guest appearances on TV shows. He also starred in a few TV shows in the 1980s and 1990s which I think I might have seen here and there. This is the first of two episodes of The Invaders that he appears in but he plays a different character in the other episode. He also was showed up in a few episodes of The Fugitive.

Michael Rennie plays the part of Magnus. He probably best known for playing the part of Klaatu is the 1951 version of The Day the Earth Stood Still.. This is his first appearance on The Invaders. He is also in a two-parter in season 2 where he plays a different character. He made guest appearances on lots of TV shows including Batman, The Time Tunnel, Lost in Space, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and Route 66. He starred in the TV show version of The Third Man.

William Smithers played the part of Nat Greely. This is the first of two episodes of the Invaders in which he appeared. He played a different character in the other episode. He is still alive and in his mid-90s but his most recent IMDb credit is from 1994. He was in one episode of Star Trek: TOS (Bread and Circuses). Most of his screen credits are prior to 1980 and are mostly guest roles on television shows.

Paul Carr plays the part of Billy Stearns. He made guest appearances on numerous shows including The Fugitive, The Time Tunnel, The Green Hornet, Star Trek: The Original Series, The Six Million Dollar Man, The Rockford Files, and The Incredible Hulk. He was in 4 episodes of the second season of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. He played the same character in all of them, Lieutenant Devlin. This is the only episode of the Invaders in which he appeared.

Katherine Justice played the part of Helen. This is the first of two episodes of The Invaders in which she appears. She plays a different character in the other episode in which she appears. She has a number of screen credits including a role in the television movie Captain America II: Death Too Soon. She is still around but has just one screen credit since 1993.

Frank Marth plays the part of Alien #1 in this episode. He appeared in numerous TV shows from the late 1940s to the early 1990s including The Honeymooners, The Phil Silvers Show, The Fugitive, The Wild Wild West, The Rat Patrol, Hogan's Heroes, Mission: Impossible, The Six Million Dollar Man, Wonder Woman, The Bionic Woman, and The Incredible Hulk, to name a few. The episodes of the Phil Silvers Show that he was in include 2 that I have already watched: 1.19 (The Revolutionary War) which I really liked and 1.06 (The Boxer) which I wasn't as crazy about.
