UFO Robo Grendizer 2.09

Flying in Space with Double Spazer

or Fly! Double Spazer!
or Le premier raid (The First Raid)

The Vegans send a new saucer beast to Earth. Commander Beto is the pilot and he is given instructions to tunnel underground in search of Grendizer's secret base. His digging causes earthquakes at the Makiba Ranch, the Space Center, and elsewhere.

Grendizer launches in search of the source of the earthquakes. Professor Umon and Duke Fleed suspect that a saucer beast might be the source of the earthquakes. Grendizer goes looking for the underground saucer beast by tunneling underground.

Duke Fleed finds the beast on two occasions but it keeps getting away from him. Grendizer gets in a couple good hits but then the beast crashes into the Space Center. Duke Fleed doesn't know what to do. If he shoots the saucer beast he might destroy the Space Center. Professor Umon tells him to send Spazer at the saucer beast. He does and it works, the saucer beast is pushed away from the Space Center.

Professor Umon tells Kouji to launch in his new ship. Kuoji in Double Spazer and Duke Fleed in Grendizer team up and destroy the saucer beast.

Thoughts

This is a key episode according to Wikirak. It is also the first of eight consecutive key episodes.

Grendizer has to use Route 4 when leaving the underground base. It takes him through caves that are filled with what looks like lava.

I like the twist of having a burrowing saucer beast. That's a new approach. I also like Kouji's new ship. It doesn't seem to have any armaments but maybe it will in the future.

I'm not crazy about any of the alternate titles for this episode. I have no idea why the French version is called the First Raid unless this marks the beginning of something new. The Vegans have been raiding Earth since the beginning of the episode. I don't see how this one is different.

This is a decent episode. Not great but it kept my interest and didn't seem too formulaic. I think the introduction of Kouji's new ship may herald the beginning of a new era for the show.
