Better Call Saul 3.04

Sabrosito

The episode opens with a flashback in which Hector goes to visit Don Eladio. He is there to deliver Don Eladio's take of the money that Hector's operation has collected. Juan Bolsa, Gus's boss, is also there. The amount of cash and the manner in which it is delivered shames Hector.

In the present, Hector's ice cream business is investigated by the Feds. Hector goes to Los Pollos Hermanos. Gus is not there. Hector and his men insist on staying until Hector returns. They scare off his customers and hold his employees there until Gus returns later that day.

Hector wants Gus to start helping him to smuggle drugs into the United States from Mexico. Gus does not get flustered. He fails to see why he should help Hector but Hector insists.

Gus has a meeting with his employees, the next day. He does his best to reassure them. The only one who asks questions is Lyle, the assistant manager, the only one who seems to be White. Lyle seems satisfied with the answers to his questions.

Kim makes a lot of phone calls and finds out which company is going to be repairing Chuck's front door. She, pretending to be his assistant, cancels his appointment. She passes the information along to Jimmy who then arranges for Mike to show up and do the repair work. Mike pokes around and takes pictures while he is there. He gives the pictures to Jimmy but declines to offer an opinion about Chuck when asked by Jimmy.

Gus goes to see Mike. He wants Mike to work for him. Mike doesn't outright accept the offer. He says it will depend on the work. Gus explains that part of the reason he didn't want Mike to kill Hector is because a bullet to the head would have been too merciful for Hector.

Jimmy and Kim and Chuck and Howard have a meeting with the assistant district attorney in charge of the case against Jimmy. They discuss the wording of Jimmy's confession and then the ADA asks Jimmy to apologize to Chuck, which he does. Kim talks to Howard and Chuck in the hallway after Jimmy and the ADA have left. She tells them that they will be fighting the disciplinary procedures. She gets Chuck to admit that there is another copy of the tape.

Kim meets up with Jimmy after she parts ways with Chuck and Howard. He asks her what she learned. All she says is, "bingo!"

Thoughts

Jimmy and Kim aren't in the first half of this episode. It is mostly Gus and Hector with a bit of Mike.

Kim seems to have crossed a line. I'm not sure if that assessment is correct but that is the way it looks to me. I understand why she is taking Jimmy's side but helping him to get Mike into Chuck's place seems like going a little further than she previously was willing to go.

Jimmy's apology to Chuck sounded like it could be interpreted in at least two ways. On the one hand it sounds like a sincere apology. On the other hand it sounds like a jab at Chuck for the way he is trying to destroy Jimmy's career.

It seems like Jimmy and Kim have Chuck right where they want him. I assume that something Mike found in Chuck's home tells him where the other copy of the tape can be found. Presumably the next step will be to damage that tape, presumably with Mike's help.

The most reasonable thing seems to be to not destroy the tape but rather do something to garble the recording so that it is useless. Another possibility might be to substitute something for the recording that is on the tape. My guess is that Kim and Jimmy will fight to have the tape repressed, they will be unsuccessful in that regard but that when the tape is played it will have nothing useful on it.

This was an excellent episode. I love how things are slowly grinding along. I'm eager to see what comes next in the various plot lines and where things will be at the end of the season.
