Strictly Business (1991)

Strictly Business (1991)

starring Tommy Davidson, Joseph C. Phillips, Halle Berry
directed by Kevin Hooks

Waymon Tinsdale, III (Joseph C. Phillips), a high powered real estate broker, is trying to get some Japanese investors to put money into a planned building when he meets Natalie (Halle Berry) by chance. Bobby Johnson (Tommy Davidson), one of Waymon's coworkers, knows Natalie and offers to help Waymon get to see her again. Bobby works in the mailroom and wants some help getting a better job at the real estate investment company, in return for the help he has offered Waymon.

Everything doesn't flow smoothly. David (David Marshall Grant), Waymon's rival at the firm, does his utmost to sabotage Waymon's efforts with some help from Gary (Sam Rockwell), his assistant. Waymon already has a girlfriend, Diedre (Anne-Marie Johnson), although their relationship isn't going very well. Waymon almost ruins his chance at a relationship with Natalie, after he has split with Deirdre, by focusing too much on his job. Everything works out in the end for Waymon, Bobby, and Natalie.

Thoughts

I don't think I saw this movie in the theater when it first came out. I'm not sure where or when I saw it first but I don't think it was more than a year or two after it was released. I recall enjoying this movie when I first saw it and I enjoyed watching it again today.

Notes

I don't think I have seen Joseph C. Phillips in anything else.

Tommy Davidson I know from In Living Color and a few movies, but I think it has been a while since I have watched anything he has been in.

The only Halle Berry movie I have watched recently is Bruised (2020) but there are lots more that I have seen.

There are a few actors who I didn't recall were in this movie.

Samuel L. Jackson (credited as Sam Jackson) has a small role in this movie. I know I had seen him in Do the Right Thing and possibly a couple other movies prior to seeing this movie the first time around.

Sam Rockwell wasn't anywhere on my radar screen at the time I first saw this movie. I've seen him in lots of movies since then. Recently I've seen him in Laggies, Iron Man 2, and Galaxy Quest.

Dennis Leary has a very small role in this movie. I probably would have recognized him when I first saw it but I didn't recall he was in it.

Annie Golden played Sheila, Waymon's secretary. I don't think I knew who she was then. It wasn't until I looked at her IMDb page that I realized she was part of the cast of Orange Is the New Black.
