Russian Doll 2.05

Exquisite Corpse

Nadia gets off the train in Budapest in 1944, in her grandmother Vera's body. She goes looking for the family treasure which she knows was taken by the Nazis. She goes to her family's old apartment. It is empty but in the building she finds Delia, Vera's friend, who was last seen in 1982 in 2.03 (Brain Drain).

Delia tells Nadia about the warehouse where confiscated valuables were taken. Nadia finds the warehouse and in the basement finds the box that holds her grandmother's valuables. She takes them and hides them in the sewer. She knocks a hole in the wall, places the valuables in the wall and then seals the hole up. She makes a map and gives it to a priest to send to Vera in New York after the war is over.

Nadia gets on the train and winds up in 1968 with Delia. They have the valuables that were hidden in the sewer in Budapest. They exchange the valuables for Krugerrands. Nadia has second thoughts about the Krugerrands but she goes along with Delia's suggestion that Krugerrands, gold coins, are the best things to take in exchange for the family valuables.

Nadia goes home with the Krugerrands. She talks to Nora, who is still less than 10. She tries to tell her about what she's been doing but she knows it doesn't make any sense. She leaves and gets on the train back to 2022. She starts moving from car to car following a man with a dog but as she goes from one car to the next she moves from one time period to another from 2022 to 1944.

The episode ends with Nora's water breaking on the train in 1982. Ruth, Delia, and Vera are there for her.

Thoughts

I'm starting to have doubts about this season of Russian Doll. I'm not sure that the ending will satisfy me.

They don't show how Nadia sealed up the wall in the sewer. One minute she is making a hole and stuffing the bag with the valuables in it. The next she is making the map and the hole has been sealed up. What happened in between those two moments?

What is going on with the time travel on the train? Is that supposed to represent something happening?

I think that there has to be something that has yet to be revealed. I'm just not sure what it is. I wonder if Vera has a secret that Nadia hasn't discovered yet. Maybe the valuables that Vera cashed in for gold were stolen from others by Vera? Maybe Nora found out about this and that's what pushed her to take the gold coins and spend them herself? I don't know but I'm sure that there's something.
