Un Village Français 3.02

Notre Père
or Our Father

Daniel and Marcel Larcher find out that their father is dying. They go to see him. Their father has decided to leave everything to Daniel. Their father looks down on Marcel and has nothing good to say to him. Their father dies before they leave.

Raymond Schwartz gets backed into a corner. He is taking a loan from Albert Crémieux, the man who is selling him the concrete business. He could have borrowed the money from his father-in-law but he didn't want to do that. Caberni finds out about Schwartz's financing and gives Raymond a choice: give Caberni half the business or go to prison.

Hortense Larcher has a couple encounters with Müller. She goes to him on behalf of her maid, Sarah Meyer. She doesn't want Sarah to lose her French citizenship. Müller takes care of it. She gives him a vial of pain killer. She tells him that her husband told her to give it to him.

A new student joins Gustave's class. Her name is Hélène Crémieux. She's the daughter of the man who is selling the concrete business to Raymond Schwartz. She talks to Gustave Larcher and Marceau Schwartz. She can tell that they have a secret. Gustave won't tell her what it is but she tricks him into revealing it, that their teacher is sleeping with a German soldier.

Jeanine Schwartz finds out from her father that Raymond did not go to him for money to buy the concrete business. She doesn't understand. She asks Raymond about it. He doesn't tell her about Caberni's ultimatum. He meets with Marie Germain briefly, in a café. He wants to help her but she doesn't want help. She has her hands full with her sons.

Schwartz meets with Caberni that evening at the concrete factory. Everyone else has left for the day. Caberni asks for his answer. Raymond takes out a gun and shoots Caberni in the chest. He drags the body to his car. He takes it to a cliff overlooking a river and tosses the body in the river.

The communist group to which Marcel and Suzanne belong get orders to start killing German soldiers. Marcel is opposed but the majority of the group decides to follow the order. Marcel decides to abide by the decision of the majority.

The mayor has a reception to welcome back two French soldiers that have been let out of prison. A number of familiar faces are there. Hortense talks to Müller about paintings. Lucienne approaches Dr. Larcher. She is having stomach pains. He examines her and tells her that she is pregnant.

Thoughts

Marcel and Daniel's father says something about Marcel having a claim to a third of his estate. Is there another Larcher sibling? Who else would get the other third if one went to Daniel and another to Marcel?

Choice is a big part of this show. Marie pushes on Raymond who says he doesn't have a choice when is comes to going business with the Germans. She says, we always have a choice. Caberni says something about life being easier when you don't have the freedom to decide, just before Raymond Schwartz kills him. Had Raymond figured out what he was going to do about Caberni before he met with Marie? I'm not sure. I'm sure that he was at least contemplating that course of action.

I'm not sure how Raymond Schwartz is going to get out of this situation. There are bound to be questions. The body will be found at some point. I wasn't convinced that he was actually going to kill Caberni until he pulled the trigger. I was still uncertain even as he took the gun out. How will this impact his relationship with Marie? They have both killed but neither knows what the other has done.

How will Lucienne get out of the situation she is in? Will she have the baby? Will Beriot help her by pretending that he is the father? Will she have an abortion?

This was a really good episode. I can see things building. The combination of Raymond dealing with Caberni, the communists voting to start killing Germans, and the reveal that Lucienne is pregnant sure packed a wallop.
