Un Village Français 3.03

La Planque
or The Stakeout

The communists start to plan how best to hit the Germans. An expert is brought in to help them plan. He is fairly young. It is decided that they should shoot a German officer in front of the German headquarters in Villeneuve. Marcel and Suzanne will pretend to be lovers. They are given the job of staking out the plaza in front of the German headquarters.

Lucienne tells Kurt that she is pregnant. She goes to see a priest who advises her that she must not abort her pregnancy. She is at a loss for what to do. Marie Germain tries to help her out. She brings her to see Madame Morhange. The two women want to help her but DeKervern walks in as they making preparations to help her abort. He goes ballistic and refuses to let them go through with it. There is a new law making abortion illegal and DeKervern is worried about what might happen to himself and Judith if it was discovered that they helped Lucienne abort her pregnancy.

Hortense makes plans to meet up with Heinrich. Daniel needs her to go see one of his patients. He needs to go out of town. She thinks about it and comes up with a story that helps her get out of helping Daniel. She goes to see Heinrich instead of helping her husband.

Marcel and Suzanne spend time hanging out near the plaza in front of the German HQ. It doesn't look like a very promising venture. They can't make sense of how it can be done safely but they come up with some plans. Suzanne spots one of the police officers that arrested her weeks before. She is afraid of being spotted. Marcel kisses her. The police officer walks past and doesn't see her.

Lucienne tries to abort the pregnancy herself. She bleeds a lot. She tries to go back to work but she collapses. She is bleeding heavily. Beriot takes her to see Dr. Larcher. The doctor takes care of her and tells her that the baby hasn't been damaged. She tries to tell him of the father's identity but he cuts her off and doesn't want to hear about it.

Marcel and Suzanne are accused by the other communists of not doing their job. The next day they get back to work at figuring out the best way to kill a German officer in front of the German HQ.

Beriot promises to help Lucienne. Kurt comes to see her and tells her that he is going to stick by her and once the war is over they will raise the child together.

Marcel and Suzanne are near the plaza when the Germans start to round up French civilians. They try to escape but they get caught in the assemblage of people rounded up.

Thoughts

Raymond Schwartz is not in this episode.

It seemed a little too convenient how Marie Germain was there for Lucienne just when she needed her to be. Marcel and Suzanne seemed to spend a lot of time talking without saying much. What happened to all the school kids? None of them are in this episode, not even Gustave.

This is by far my least favorite episode of this season so far. There was more than one element that felt forced in it.
