Poetic Justice (1993)

Poetic Justice (1993)

starring Janet Jackson, Tupac Shakur, Regina King, Joe Torry
directed by John Singleton

109 minutes

Justice (Janet Jackson), a hairdresser who is still grieving over the murder of her drug dealing boyfriend, needs to get from Los Angeles to Oakland when she discovers that her car won't start. She rides instead with her friend Iesha (Regina King) and Iesha's boyfriend Chicago (Joe Torry). Lucky (Tupac Shakur), who works with Chicago and unsuccessfully hit on Justice the day before, is also along for the ride.

Thoughts

I've known about this movie for a long time but this was my first time watching it.

Lucky and Chicago both work for the US Postal Service. The road trip to Oakland is done in a USPS mail truck.

Justice and Lucky do not get along early on but over time that changes. Iesha and Chicago seem close at first but before the movie is over they are at each other's throats. The transformations of both couples was handled quite well. I found the scenes between Justice and Lucky toward the end of the movie to be quite tender.

This is for the most part a road film. Two-thirds or more of the movie takes place during the trip to Oakland. There are some humorous moments but I wouldn't call it a romantic comedy. It has some serious notes that make me think of it more as a romantic drama.

I really like this movie. It isn't perfect. There are some things that are glossed over a little too quickly but it's solidly good.
