Un Village Français 5.01

Travail Obligatoire
or Forced Labor

23 Sep 1943

Raymond Schwartz is now married to Josephine who used to be his housekeeper. Antoine, Josephine's brother, works at the mill with Raymond. Marchetii shows up at the mill. He's looking for a suspect. Marchetti finds and kills the man when he tries to escape.

The French government is starting to send young French men to Germany to work. Raymond has gotten an exemption for Antoine but Marchetti gets that revoked.

Jeanine has married Chassagne who is now mayor of Villeneuve. Someone tries to kill Chassagne but the attempt in unsuccessful. Chassagne is shot in the arm but he survives. One of his assistants isn't quite so lucky. Marchetti is tasked with finding Chassagne's would be killer.

Chassagne wants Marchetti to arrest Bériot because the attempt happened just outside the school. Marchetti doesn't want to arrest Bériot. He puts off approaching Bériot for the present. Eventually Servier comes to him and insists that he do something about it or one of them will get replaced.

Jules and Lucienne Bériot welcome a new teacher who shows up unexpectedly. She is there to teach singing to the students at the school.

Suzanne and Marcel make plans to rob a truck which they are pretty sure is carrying rifles. They have some disagreement about how to approach the situation. He takes her to see her daughter, while they are still planning the operation. Her husband, who she she thought was in a POW camp in Germany, shows up unexpectedly. This creates more tension between Suzanne and Marcel.

Raymond makes plans to sneak Antoine over the border into Switzerand after they learn about what Marchetti has done. Antoine hides out for about 24 hours in an abandoned house. He meets another guy who is on the run from the authorities. They take off running after they hear someone entering the house. Raymond shows up at the house an hour later but Antoine is nowhere to be found.

Thoughts

Daniel Larcher, Hortense Larcher, Heinrich Müller, Marie Germain, and Gustave Larcher are not in this episode. I'm curious to see where things stand for them when they return.

About 10 months have elapsed since the end of the previous season. There have been some definite changes. What will Raymond do now that Antoine has disappeared? How much pressure will Chassagne place on Marchetti? Will Raymond and Jeanine cross paths? How effective will the resistance be? Does the return of Suzanne's husband mean that her relationship with Marcel is over and done? What's the story with the new teacher? I suspect that she is either with the Resistance or planted there by the Vichy government.

This is a decent start to the season. It doesn't look quite as grim as the beginning of the previous season. I look forward to seeing how things develop from here.
