starring Ed Asner, Christopher Plummer, Jordan Nagai
directed by Pete Docter
96 minutes
Seventy-eight-year-old Carl Fredricksen (Ed Asner), soon after his wife Ellie dies, takes off on a journey to visit Paradise Falls in South America. Russell (Jordan Nagai), a Wilderness Explorer Scout, accompanies Carl on the journey, partly by chance and partly because he needs to earn a badge for helping the elderly.
Carl and Russell discover a colorful bird in the vicinity of Paradise Falls. Russell names it Kevin although he later learns that it is a female. They also encounter several talking dogs on their trek to the top of the falls, all but one of whom wants to capture the bird for their master, Charles Muntz (Christopher Plummer).
Carl and Russell eventually meet Muntz, whom Carl and Ellie idolized when they were young. Muntz is cordial until he learns that they know where to find the bird and that they aren't interested in helping him capture it. Muntz and his dogs (other than Dug, a golden retriever who instantly takes to Carl) turn on Carl and Russell as they try to get their hands on Kevin.
Thoughts
I have enjoyed most if not all of the Pixar films that I have seen but I had not seen Up before. This one is no exception but I'm not sure why it took me so long to get around to watching it.
I was very pleased with how the movie was structured. They wasted very little time moving the story forward to the important part, the trip to the top of Paradise Falls.
There were a few moments in this film that I found to be very moving. I was a little surprised by the fate of Muntz. I didn't think the movie would go there.
Overall I am extremely positive on this movie. I could see myself watching it again.
