Ensign D'Vana Tendi joins the crew of the USS Cerritos. She is shown around by Ensigns Beckett Mariner and Brad Boimler before they are sent planet side as part of an away team. Ensign Sam Rutherford is on a date with Barnes in the ship's lounge when Commander Jack Ransom returns from the planet with an insect bite that causes him to transform into a flesh eating zombie.
Everything goes nuts aboard the Cerritos for a while. Rutherford and Barnes manage to continue their date and avoid getting bitten although in the end they both come to the realization that they aren't interested in one another.
Captain Carol Freeman asked Ensign Boimler to keep an eye on Mariner and report any misconduct on her part. Boimler catches Mariner sneaking off while they are planet side. He follows her and spies her trying to sell farming tools to the locals. Boimler gets covered in goop from a giant spider creature which helps to save the day when they get back up to the Cerritos. Boimler has the opportunity to but does not snitch on Mariner.
Thoughts
I think that Mariner is Captain Freeman's daughter or at least that's what I read from an exchange that Freeman had with an admiral. I don't know if anyone on board knows this, other than Freeman and Mariner.
This is the second animated Star Trek series. I've seen a few episodes of the first but not for quite some time. My recollection is that it is nothing like this one, certainly not as humorous as this one is.
This was fast paced but strong first episode. I hope that not all the episodes are quite so fast paced.
