Un sens au monde

or A Meaning to the World

Marchetti convinces that Marguerite that he will have Lucienne and Jules arrested. He tells her horror stories about what will happen to Marguerite when the Germans get their hands on her. Marguerite, feeling as thought she doesn't have a choice, agrees to tell him where he can find Antoine in return for passes that will get them to Switzerland. Marchetti agrees and she shows him where the Resistance camp is on a map.

Chassagne and Marcel talk in the time that they have left. There is no reprieve for them. They are marched out into the yard. Marcel gives Müller a note for Gustave. Marcel and Chassagne smoke a cigarette and then they are killed by firing squad.

Le Jour d'après

or The Day After

Chassagne wants to know where Antoine and the Resistance fighters can be found. He has most of the people who were at the parade arrested and questioned but no one provides any useful information. 

Marchetti interrogates Lucienne and Marguerite. He's convinced that they must know something. They manage to come up with a good story but in the end Marchetti finds a hole in their story. Marguerite, changes their story and admits that they were together, sexually. She has an arrest record for this sort of thing which the police are able to check. They are released after her arrest record is verified.

L'Alsace et la Lorraine

or Alsace and Lorraine

11 Nov 1943

Ansleme takes a couple men and cuts the phone lines into Villeneuve. Marguerite seduces Rainer and takes him back to her bedroom. She gets his keys and hands them off to Lucienne, who sneaked into the room. Lucienne goes to the radio room and disables the radio using instructions that Marguerite gave her.

Someone calls the German HQ in Villeneuve pretending to be the German outpost in Moissey, the next town over and saying that they were being overrun by terrorists. Kollwitz takes most of the German soldiers in Villeneuve and heads to Moissey.

or A Birth Cerificate

Daniel is thrown in the same cell as Marcel, after he's been tortured some. Marcel does his best to help his brother but they wind up arguing a little bit. Marcel asks him about Gustave and tells Daniel about Tequiero's father.

Raymond talks Marie into having sex with him, away from the group. Antoine goes looking for Marie and spots them and what they are doing. Antoine is cold towards Marie, when everyone finally gets back together to continue practicing the play. He decides that they should have a parade instead of a play. Marie is against it but most of the others seem to like the idea, except for Claude.

Les Trois Coups

or The Three Blows

Antoine and the others shoot their way out of the German headquarters. They all make it out except Marcel. He volunteers to stay behind. The others all make it back to the camp in the woods. They come up with a plan to bribe a German judge to commute Marcel's death sentence to life in prison.

Marcel gets tortured by the Germans, by Müller and by another German officer who thinks that he can teach Müller a thing or two about torture. Eventually Marcel is returned to a cell. He is joined, not long after that, by Alberto Rodrigues, another man who is part of the Resistance. He is also Tequiero's father.

or The Delivery

Marie and Suzanne meet with Antoine in the woods. They ask for his help. He agrees to help them but Claude thinks that it is a bad idea.

Heinrich confronts Hortense about her source for the morphine. He tells her that he knows she is lying. She tells him that he got it from Chassagne. He kicks her out because he feels as if he can't trust her.

Lucienne starts to have second thoughts about trusting Marguerite after she discovers that Marguerite lied to her. She goes looking in Marguerite's room when she isn't there and finds a picture of Camille, Marguerite's ex. Marguerite told Lucienne that Camille was a man but the picture she finds is of a woman and has Camille's name on it.

Le Déménagement

or The Move

Josephine is dead. Raymond asks that he be allowed to bury her without an autopsy, Servier says that he will do what he can to make that happen. Marchetti is not present.

Marcel wakes up. He is in a cell with Anselme, Raoul (Marie's son), and Simon (who was picked up for buying ration cards off the black market). They argue about killing roaches. Suzanne pulls some strings and gets in to see Marcel. She asks if it was her note that gave him away. He lies and tells her that it wasn't but that one of the cops recognized him.

L'Arrestation

or The Arrest

Marcel, Suzanne, and the other communists find out that the police are making enquiries. They are worried that their contact at the cafe will get arrested. They draw straws to see who will go in to town to warn him. Marcel draws the short straw but Suzanne insists on accompanying him.

Antoine gets the name of Daniel Larcher from Anselme, the farmer. He gets Daniel to go with him, at gun point when Dr. Larcher refuses. He brings him out into the forest and makes him treat the wounded German soldier.

La Répétition

or Training

Antoine and his friends are still in the woods. Antoine makes them train, rain or shine, even though they don't have any weapons. They scrounge for food. Claude, Antoine's friend who studied acting, suggests that they put on a play in the hopes that it will raise spirits. Antoine is aginst it but many of the others are in favor of it.

Chassagne pushes Marchetti to make some progress on finding Antoine and his guys. Chassagne thinks that they are are the ones who killed the three German soldiers who were killed by the communists. Chassagne knows that Marchetti is the one who killed a German border soldier near the Swiss border. Chassagne knows of Judith and that she is in a refugee camp outside of Switzerland and threatens to have her picked up and deported to Poland.

Naissance d'un chef

or Birth of a Leader

Marie Germain and the men who accompany her don't stick around the camp very long. She pulls Antoine aside, after he steps forward as the leader of the group, and advises him to move the camp because otherwise they will be found by the police or the Germans.

Marchetti is warned by Delage, one of his men, that Loriot, another of his men, might put the pieces together and figure out that he killed the German border guard, see 4.12 (The Border).

Le jour des alliances

or A Day for Exchanging Rings

24 Sep 1943

Antoine and his new friend run from the police. They take shelter in a farm but the farmer kicks them out. They are joined by another man who is also seeking to avoid being sent to Germany. They head out into the forest where they find a handful of young men camping out. No one has any food.

Marcel, Suzanne, and the other communists stop a German supply truck. Marcel and one of the other men are disguised as French policemen. It doesn't go well. They were hoping just to take some weapons but there were more German soldiers in the back of the truck. Two of the Communists and three of the German soldiers get killed.

Travail Obligatoire

Raymond Schwartz is now married to Josephine who used to be his housekeeper. Antoine, Josephine's brother, works at the mill with Raymond. Marchetii shows up at the mill. He's looking for a suspect. Marchetti finds and kills the man when he tries to escape.

The French government is starting to send young French men to Germany to work. Raymond has gotten an exemption for Antoine but Marchetti gets that revoked.
